Completed 2020
Reclaiming roads from cars and resurrecting hidden cultural gems, were the big theme ideas in Dickson Rothschild and community members’ entry to the NSW Department of Planning’s 2020 Public Space Ideas Competition. Image the Cahill Expressway, directly above Sydney’s Circular Quay and devoted to cars, recreated as a looping pedestrian and cycling precinct travelling from across the Harbour Bridge to finish in either the Royal Botanic Gardens or at the foot of the Sydney Opera House.
Such an asset could include cafes, bars and retail spaces amongst the landscaped open space; a world class public space celebrating the best of our harbour city and overlooking Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour.
Legible connections could also be created to Observatory Hill and its hidden cultural gems including the former Signal Station (1847) and Sydney Observatory (1858); Fort Street Public School (1848); and The National Trust Centre and SH Ervin Gallery, which have annexed and chopped off from the rest of city over time.
